The Aditya Birla group has selected Pune to test market its retail format ‘More’. Of the 15 odd stores finalised for Pune, the company will be rolling out five to seven retail stores in the city in the first week of June.
The Birla group has begun testing waters in the Pune market by hiring a local stall at Pune’s Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) to get a first hand experience of the volatile and price sensitive market on a daily basis.
Besides getting a feel of the market pulse, market sources said the More stores would be coming up in Pune where Reliance Fresh and Subhiksha already exist.
The company will bring both its formats in Pune – More which is targeted as the retail neighbourhood convenience store and the hypermarket. Market sources indicated that the company would initially focus on ‘More’. The store sizes would range from 2,500 sq ft to 3,000 sq ft. The group is entering contract farming for 2,200 acres for onions and other vegetables in Nashik.
